WE DO THINGS A little DIFFERENTly.
Founded by three Tisch classmates, rubbertape was created with the hope that production could be kinder.
As we came up in the industry, we worked as everything from PAs to camera assistants to grips to set dressers. We worked some great jobs, but also plenty where we were treated as cogs in the machine, where huge spreads of charcuterie sat untouched in talent holding while producers quibbled over six minutes of crew overtime. We decided we wanted to do things a little differently when we were able to call the shots.
We approach production with the belief that everyone does their best work in a positive environment. We hope that everyone we work with will want to come back and collaborate with us again, and we started rubbertape with the goal of treating everyone, from video village to our PAs and vendors, with the same gratitude and respect. Five years later, with Oscar-shortlisted and Emmy-winning projects, our greatest achievement is still the joy we get from the process, and from seeing our crew, directors, and clients thrive on set and beyond.
rubbertape is known for commercially successful branded work, wild music videos, and especially our heartfelt narrative and documentary films. Our taste is eclectic; we like comedy and horror, romance and drama, social-impact and sci-fi. The common denominator is often stories that urge us to see the world in new ways, or find a fresh angle on a topic we think we know and understand.
Among the past highlights is our short doc 38 at the Garden, which tells the impossible story of Jeremy Lin’s meteoric rise in the NBA through the lens of covid-era discrimination against Asian Americans. 38 at the Garden which premiered at Tribeca in 2022, released on HBO, and won the 2023 Sports Emmy for Best Short Documentary. Our first narrative feature Cicada is a tender gay love story that subverts standard story structure and threads together improvised and scripted moments in a tapestry of trauma and love. Cicada was nominated for a 2022 Independent Spirit Award and distributed theatrically by Strand Releasing. Our web-series Bridesman blended narrative and branded interests; the six-part comedy series was produced for Grindr, released natively in-app, and received a 2022 Emmy nomination.
Our short-form films have debuted on Vimeo Staff Picks and Short of the Week, and played at festivals including Sundance, Slamdance, SXSW, Aspen Short Fest, and Frameline. Our music video work includes videos for best-selling artists including d4vd, Lil Nas X, Ava Max, and viral sensation Ashnikko. Our commercial and branded clients have included Bumble, Life Time, Sesame Street, Paramount, Hilton and more.
Our latest feature documentary, A House Is Not A Disco, debuted at SXSW 2024.
